Conversion of Heart

17 February 2010 View Comments

Here we stand at the opening of a door. (Rev. 3:20) It is Ash Wednesday, the day we begin our journey in the desert, that is if we choose to enter the door. All too often we stand at the door and merely look inside. Perhaps we step in for a moment and then step back again on the other side.

Christ beckons you and I to enter in, to join him in the desert, to allow him to transform us. We must take this journey if we are to fully experience the joy of Resurrection at Easter.

We must walk through the desert of our pride, our lust, our sloth, our envy, our greed, our gluttony, and our anger with Christ if we are to fully allow ourselves the true joy and freedom of Resurrection. Lent is not merely a series of events leading to a bigger more joyful event. Lent is not merely a time to “not have” certain things so we can be more grateful for them once Easter comes.

Lent is a time of conversion, of transformation, it is a retreat of the soul. We give up certain things during Lent not merely to show our love for Christ but so that we might allow that little “suffering” to remind us of Christ which should lead to prayer. We give up things for Lent so that we might learn to rely on God more in our lives.

Lent is an opportunity for Grace. We make room in our lives for God through our prayer, our fasting, our giving. If we fully enter in and allow it to be a time to repent, to pray, to fast, and to give – then we can allow the floodgates of God’s grace and mercy to flow more into our lives.

Imagine what life would look like if you and I allowed an increase of God’s grace and mercy into our lives this Lent. Each day we might find ourselves to be a new creation.

I pray that you and I may allow God to continue to draw us closer into himself. May God’s grace fill us and make us whole.

If you are looking for a Lenten Resource to help you on this journey I have two more suggestions for you.

  • Adore Ministries just released a free downloadable resource. It is a daily reflection. You can find it at www.adoreworship.com
  • Also, I have begun offering a daily text message which is geared at offering you a little prayer or inspiration to help you continue to focus on God  this Lent. I encourage you to check it out and sign up today.

** I apologize that I did not post on Monday of this week. I decided to wait until today since it is Ash Wednesday. You actually will most likely see many more posts from me during Lent. Probably not everyday – but most days of the week.**
